After a wet springtime season it’s so nice to be able to go outside and enjoy the sensational warmth of the sun.  While many experts may warn of the dangers of getting too much sun, there are many benefits to catching rays. In limited amounts, of course, and with adequate protection.

The suns produces both good and bad ultraviolet rays. The bad ultraviolet rays are the ones that can cause us harm later in life. However, the good ultraviolet rays help us to create Vitamin D which:

  • supports the immune system
  • protects against dementia and brain aging
  • decreases symptoms of asthma
  • strengthens teeth
  • lowers cholesterol

Each year Consumer Reports releases a study reviewing the best and worst sunscreens on the market. Instead of running to your closet to check if yours made the list, make your own using natural ingredients and sweet smelling essential oils.

For this project you’ll need a specialty oil called carrot seed oil. This may be knew to you, so read up on the added benefits of carrot seed to learn other ways you may use it in the future. In addition to protecting your skin, carrot seed supports healthy liver and lymphatic function.

All Natural Summertime Lotion

To make this summer lotion to protect your skin first mix together the base, then add essential oils. You will need:

Lotion Base

1/2 Cup Olive Oil
1/4 Cup Coconut Oil
2 Tbsp Beeswax
1 Tsp Jojoba Oil
1 Tsp Avocado Oil
2 Tbsp Zinc Oxide
1 Tsp Red Raspberry Seed Oil

Essential Oils

30 Drops Carrot Seed Oil
30 Drops Lavender Oil

Instructions:

Combine lotion base ingredients, except zinc oxide in a double boiler, just until melted. If you don’t have a double boiler, use a heat safe bowl and a pot. Simply fill pot about 1/4 full with water and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to a simmer and fit the bowl into the pot. The bottom of the bowl should not reach the water (at least 2″ to 3″ space between the bowl and water is optimal) Remove from heat and let cool. This should take about 5-10 minutes. Then add 2 Tbsp zinc oxide and mix. Once combined add essential oils and place in container of choice.
Don’t forget to make a few batches for the whole family- this is a safe product for kids.

To use lotion, apply as needed before heading out into the sun. Re-apply often.

Keep out bad rays and hone the good with this all natural summertime lotion that’s easy to make and take with you on the go!
